Reversing Into Garage

Reversing into Garage is a garage rock band from Liuzhangli, Taipei, formed in 2013 by vocalist Li-Feng Ma-Yao and guitarist Cheng Li-Kai.
In the early days, most of their songs were recorded in empty warehouses using mobile phones, capturing the raw spirit of garage rock and a distinctly DIY sonic texture.

Frontman Li-Feng, also the band’s primary songwriter, was heavily influenced by artists such as Arctic Monkeys and Jack White, embracing straightforward and powerful arrangements. Their lyrics confront life’s frustrations and bad moods with language that is intense, sometimes even aggressive. Musically, the band is rooted in garage rock, while incorporating elements of greasy rock, punk, and lo-fi aesthetics.

In late 2018, they released their debut album “Trouble of One’s Own Making,” which received a nomination for Best New Band at the Freshmusic Awards in Singapore. The title track was also nominated for Best Rock Single at Taiwan’s Golden Indie Music Awards.

From 2020 to 2021, the band released the EP “The Urban Personality Disorder Tetralogy” along with singles “Rorschach Inkblot” and “Curfew.” The EP was again nominated for EP of the Year at the Freshmusic Awards. Their early works were restless and explosive, confronting social observations and darker psychological themes while speaking out against the injustices they witnessed.

Approaching their tenth anniversary, the band released their second album “Making Love Out of Bitterness.” The record responds to negativity and hardship with the theme of love, presenting a more mature and diverse rock sound. It also earned them their first nomination for Best Band at the Freshmusic Awards.

In 2024, they released the EP “Of Course, All Is Well.” The track “Burning Incense and Worshipping Buddha” was nominated for Best Rock Single at the 16th Golden Indie Music Awards.

Their 2025 album “Don’t Advise If You Haven’t Walked the Path” continues their rock spirit while introducing softer and brighter tones. The record captures the emotions of entering their thirties—leaving behind the home built during youth, celebrating life’s milestones, and expressing both affection and frustration toward the people and things around them.

Today, Reversing into Garage moves more freely than ever, shedding unnecessary personas and letting their music honestly reflect the next chapter of their lives.

Although the band jokingly claims that they started the band “just for free drink coupons and free entry to see other bands,” their love for music is undeniable. Beneath the playful and absurd lyrics lies a very real sense of anger and helplessness.
